Fraction to Decimal Converter

A fraction is just a division waiting to happen: 3/8 is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Going back, a decimal becomes the nearest fraction with a sensible denominator (this tool searches up to 64ths). Most people need this for imperial measurements – rulers, spanners, drill bits – which are all in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths.

Inch fractions as decimals

A 12-inch ruler divides each inch into 16ths, so its smallest mark is 0.0625 in.

Repeating decimals and rounding

Some fractions do not land cleanly: 1/3 is 0.333…, 1/7 is 0.142857 repeating. The converter rounds the display to six places, and when you convert back it picks the closest fraction up to 64ths – so 0.333 returns as 1/3, not 333/1000. For measurements, round to the nearest available tool mark rather than carrying six decimals you cannot cut to.

Where this fits

Pair this with the mm to inches converter when a drawing is metric but your tools are imperial: convert to a decimal inch, then read off the nearest fraction here. For scaling a recipe up or down by a fractional amount, the percentage calculator is the cleaner route.
